Be Ready When the Weather Turns Cold

 · Winter oil can be used year round, but "summer oil" should not be used at those lower temps. Plan accordingly. Construction equipment is designed to run on No. 2 off-road diesel, but a winter blend (combination of No. 1 and No. 2) should be used in the winter months to ensure proper lubrication qualities and to reduce gelling.

Deep Frying 101: Treating Your Oil Right

Most deep frying starts with oil between 325 and 375 degrees, but the temperature drops when food is added. Once the oil recovers some heat, it should remain somewhere between 250 and 325 degrees (depending on your recipe) for the duration of cooking. To maintain the proper oil temperature, use a clip-on deep-fry thermometer and keep close watch.

How Much Heat For Sauteing Do You Need to Properly Cook Foods

 · In saute, you heat the oil until "just before it begins to smoke". Oil will begin a convection process before smoking, going from perfectly smooth in the pan to striated, getting ripples. Sesame oil will smoke immediately in a 320°F pan. Peanut oil can handle it. So, I heat the pan to around 212°F before adding the oil.

The Seven Most Common Hydraulic Equipment Mistakes

As the oil's temperature increases, its viscosity decreases. Therefore, a hydraulic system is operating too hot when it reaches the temperature at which oil viscosity falls below that required for adequate lubrication. A vane pump requires a higher minimum viscosity than a piston pump, for example.

Fluid Management Best Practices

The operator's manual will also outline the variation of engine oil life for atmospheric temperatures and which viscosity grade to use. Viscosity refers to how the fluid flows in certain temperatures. In colder temperatures, a thinner oil works best, while a thicker fluid is suggested for warmer temperatures.

High oil temperatures for long periods will drastically reduce the lifetime of the transmission. To keep down the oil temperature, the system pressure during transport must be lowered, meaning that the minimum displacement for the motor must be limited to a reasonable value. Circuit pressure during transport around 200-250 bar is recommended.
